Vehicle Banksman Practical Training Course

This course aims to ensure that site-based traffic management is delivered safely and is done so of high quality. The course provides attendees with an understanding of the risks related to the movement of vehicles on site.

The course is suited to operatives who assist in the moving and loading/unloading of vehicles in their occupation.


To provide an understanding of Regulations and current guidance related to the responsible persons for vehicle maneuvering and reversing operations, including HASAWA, MHASAW, PUWER, The Workplace (HS & W) Regulations Safety Signs Regulations 136, and INDG148.

Areas Covered

The course will comprise of theoretical and practical instruction covering the following: 

  • Accidents – causes and prevention 
  • Acts and Regulations 
  • Understand the limitations of differing vehicles available 
  • Understand correct procedures in manoeuvring vehicles 
  • Banks man responsibilities
  • PPE 
  • Safe systems of work 
  • Recognised signals 
  • Risk assessing the manoeuvre 
  • Planning the manoeuvre 
  • Practical applications of the course content


On completion of training candidates will have a theoretical understanding of the following: 

  • Responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 98 
  • Banks-man safety code 
  • Banks-man procedures 
  • Risk of vehicle movements 
  • Planning the manoeuvre 
  • Signal systems 3.7 Banks man PPE


On completion of training the candidate will be able to undertake: – 

  •  Vehicle movement risk assessment 
  • Setting of manoeuvring area 
  • Undertake signaling 
  • Position vehicles 
  • Control of banks man operations

Awarding Body

  • National Plant Operators Registration scheme (NPORs)
  • British register of Industrial truck trainers and operators (BRITTOp)
  • Member of British Safety Council
