When it comes to working at height, safety is paramount. Whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced professional, IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) training is essential for anyone operating powered access equipment. This training is recognised globally and is often a requirement for many construction, maintenance, and industrial roles. In this blog, we’ll provide a detailed overview of the IPAF training process, covering the specific equipment categories, the additional courses available and what you can expect as a participant.

Overview of IPAF Training

IPAF training is designed to ensure that operators have the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). The training not only helps to minimise the risk of accidents, but also ensures compliance with industry safety standards. By the end of the course, participants will be certified to operate specific types of MEWPs and in some cases, manage operations involving these machines.

Types of Equipment Covered

IPAF training courses cover a range of MEWPs, categorised as follows:

  1. Mobile Vertical (3a): This category focuses on self-propelled vertical lifts, such as scissor lifts. These platforms can be driven while elevated, making them highly versatile for a variety of tasks.
  2. Mobile Boom (3b): This category includes mobile boom lifts, such as articulated or telescopic booms. These machines offer both vertical and horizontal movement, providing access to areas that are difficult to reach.
  3. Static Boom (1b): This category covers equipment like trailer-mounted booms and cherry pickers, which have extendable arms that can reach high work areas while the base remains stationary.
  4. Specialist Equipment: IPAF also offers courses on more specialised equipment, including vehicle-mounted platforms and insulated aerial devices for working near electrical hazards.

What to Expect During Your IPAF Training

1. Classroom Instruction or eLearning

Your IPAF training can start with a classroom session or via eLearning, depending on your preference. The theoretical portion covers essential topics such as:

  • Health and Safety Regulations: A comprehensive overview of relevant laws and guidelines, including risk assessments and PPE requirements.
  • Hazard Awareness: Identifying potential hazards when working at height, including weather conditions, ground stability and overhead obstructions.
  • Operational Best Practices: Guidance on safe operation practices, including pre-use inspections, machine controls and emergency procedures.

The theory portion typically lasts a few hours, depending on the course length and the types of equipment being covered. With eLearning, you have the flexibility to complete this part of the training at your own pace, making it a convenient option for busy professionals.

2. Practical Training

After the theory session, you’ll participate in practical training, where you’ll get hands-on experience with the equipment. Under the guidance of a qualified instructor, you’ll learn how to safely and efficiently operate the equipment.

  • Pre-Use Inspections: You’ll be trained on how to perform thorough pre-use checks to ensure the equipment is safe and ready for operation.
  • Operating Controls: The instructor will demonstrate the controls. You’ll then practice using these controls in a safe environment.
  • Practical Exercises: You’ll engage in various tasks, such as maneuvering the equipment, elevating the platform, and navigating obstacles. These exercises simulate real-world scenarios you might encounter on the job.
  • Emergency Procedures: You’ll also learn how to respond to emergencies, such as platform malfunctions or falls from height. Being prepared for these situations is crucial for maintaining safety on site.

3. Assessment and Certification

The final part of your IPAF training includes an assessment, consisting of both a written test and a practical evaluation:

  • Written Test: This multiple-choice exam assesses your understanding of the theoretical knowledge covered during the course, including safety regulations, equipment categories, and operational best practices.
  • Practical Assessment: You’ll be observed operating the equipment, demonstrating your ability to carry out pre-use inspections, safely maneuver the machine, and follow emergency protocols.

Successful completion of both assessments will earn you the IPAF PAL (Powered Access Licence) card, which is valid for five years. This card certifies your ability to operate specific types of MEWPs safely.

Additional Courses and Certifications

In addition to the standard IPAF operator courses, there are several specialised training options available:

IPAF MEWPs for Managers:
This course is designed for those who are responsible for planning, supervising, or managing the use of MEWPs on site. The course covers topics such as selecting the right equipment for the job, risk assessments, legal requirements, and emergency procedures. It’s ideal for site managers, project managers, and health and safety officers who need to understand the safe operation and management of MEWPs.

IPAF Harness Use and Inspection:
Working at height often requires the use of safety harnesses to prevent falls. This add-on course teaches participants how to correctly select, inspect and use a safety harness when working at height. Proper harness use is essential for operator safety, and this course ensures you’re fully equipped to manage this aspect of working at height.

Final Thoughts

IPAF training is an essential component of working safely with powered access equipment. Whether you’re aiming to become an operator of specific MEWPs or looking to manage their use on a job site, our comprehensive IPAF training courses ensure that you’re well-prepared. The training can be tailored to your needs, whether through traditional classroom sessions, practical on-site experience or flexible eLearning options.

By the end of your training, you’ll not only be certified but also confident in your ability to work at height safely and effectively. Remember, safety is always the top priority, and proper training is the key to a successful, accident-free career in powered access.
