Who can provide lift-truck training?
Training in how to operate a forklift can be provided by an organisation that is a member of an accredited body, or an awarding organisation that is subjected to other quality assurance regimes. Alternatively, training may be provided by an organisation that is independent, including in-house provision by employees that have undertaken the forklift supervisor qualification.
Your experienced instructor from PD Training will be fully RTITB qualified and accredited to ensure your training is of the highest standards and can provide training in the following trucks:
Class 1
Electric motor rider forklifts that are the best option for loading and unloading trailers, handling pallets and other indoor tasks. You often see class 1 lift trucks in food storage, retail, factory and general warehousing job sites.
Class 2
Electric motors offer a variety of narrow isle forklifts that can be used to pick orders in small spaces.
Class 3
Electric pallet jacks, stackers and tow tractors. These are good for unloading deliveries and moving loads where they can then be handled by other types of forklifts.
Class 4
Internal combustion cushion tyre forklifts, designed for indoor use and provide a smooth ride on indoor surfaces and can’t be punctured.
Class 5
Internal combustion pneumatic tire forklifts are commonly used outdoors instead of inside, due to their better performance.
Class 6
Electric/IC engine tow tractors are often used for towing loads rather than lifting. They are often used at airports and assembly lines.
Class 7
Rough terrain forklifts have large tractor-style tires for outdoor use in rough terrain. These trucks are often the popular choice used at lumber yards and construction sites to lift building materials to above-ground work sites.
How long should a basic training course last?
Forklift truck training for a Novice last around 3-5 days, depending on the type of truck involved. Over the course of your training, approximately 90% of your time will be spent on the forklift itself, learning how to operate the machine. The remaining 10% of your time is spent learning the theoretical element of driving a forklift and practicing for your assessment that you will sit at the end of your training.
Refresher training
Lift-truck operators that already hold a lift-truck licence can attend familiarisation training to refresh their skills and knowledge. This is recommended every 3-5 years to ensure your employees are fully trained and keep up to date with current health and safety authority guidelines, for example, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) acop l117, providing the Approved Code of Practice and guidance (l117). This ensures their forklift licence is valid.
Supervisor training
For those organisations looking to conduct their own in-house training and forklift operations, their lead operator can be provided with management training, or forklift supervisor training that will certify them to train and mentor others in their work environment. Having an instructor with experience on site as part of the team allows businesses and organisations to keep training costs down.
Accreditation and certificate
Once the training has been conducted and each trainee has passed their test, delegates in the team will receive their certificates and are fully licensed to drive the forklift they were training in. Certificates will be sent to the employer. Each trainee can request their certificate as and when required.
Requirements for Forklift training courses
Forklifts are an important part of logistics, manufacturing, distribution centre, warehouses or construction sites. It is therefore important that anyone using one is properly trained. Operator training provides important insights into how to drive and operate the forklift, as well as ways to prevent accidents. A forklift operator needs to have sufficient training and experience to safely operate their forklift for the tasks it was designed for.
If you’re not properly trained to use a forklift, you risk injuring or killing people. That’s why accredited training courses in the right forklift make sure both your safety and the safety of your coworkers are taken care of.
Forklift training courses near me
When searching for ‘Forklift training courses near me’, PD Training provides training across the UK. “Training courses near me” are available both off-site and on-site, with our accredited trainers often delivering training at client site’s.
Why do we recommend on site lift truck training to companies?
Just one wrong move of the forklift operator can compromise his and others’ safety at the site. When the lift truck training is delivered onsite, the course content is more engaging and relevant to the delegate’s working environment. This way, delegates learn the operating requirements and limitations of their own machines and facilities in their everyday environment and the outcome is easy to apply once the training is complete.
Forklift operators in any industry that get licensed onsite tend to retain the information more effectively. By already working on the site they are learning from, they will understand the site-specific safety procedures, work equipment, restrictions and hazards. It will also out them at ease to learn in an environment where they feel comfortable in their surroundings.
