Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, employers have a legal duty to ensure the health and safety of all staff; this includes minimising the risk of stress-related illnesses that originate, or are made worse, in the workplace. Stress can take a huge toll on employees’ physical and mental health and also affects their work performance and relationships. It’s also a major cause of long-term absence from work: in effect, more working days are lost due to stress, than for any other single reason. Statistics show that in 2020/21 there were 822,000 workers suffering from work-related stress, anxiety or depression, which accounted for 50% of all work-related ill health cases recorded.
The main work factors cited by respondents as causing work-related stress, depression or anxiety were workload pressures, tight deadlines, too much responsibility and a lack of managerial support. Knowing how to effectively manage the factors that can cause work-related stress in employees, encourage them to talk and take action is key to managing people effectively; furthermore, stress awareness training can reduce costs of high staff turnover and protect the business culture and reputation.
