If you prepare food, serve food, handle raw food, or cook food as part of your job, you need to have appropriate food hygiene training. Though holding a certification in food safety isn’t legally required to prepare or sell food in the UK, you must be able to prove that you know what you’re doing.

I bake from home and sell online – Do I need a Food Safety & Hygiene certificate?

As the popularity of baking has become an increased trend, we have noticed a boost of home baking accounts appearing on our Instagram newsfeed

Many have recently developed a true passion for baking, especially during lockdown, mostly inspired by famous tv shows or celebrity youtubers and influencers, looking to gain an additional income by selling baked goods online.

Suddenly, what started as a love for baking, became a great business opportunity for many, as small business owners discovered an increased interest from online audiences to support small businesses and startups

This support allowed millions of talented bakers to promote, through social media, their delicious creations, building successful businesses in a period where redundancies and job losses were the talk of the day

As the popularity of home baking continues to rise in the UK, many small businesses continue to flourish into successfully driven and reputable organisations, in an online world where competition is fierce and comments are live

As a talented professional entering the world of business, you must ensure you have all legalities in place, ensuring you have peace of mind, knowing that your customers can safely enjoy your creations

If you are wondering how to start a baking business from home,

here is a guide of what is legally required for you to sell your baked goods online

  1. Choose a trading name for your business that isn’t already registered online
  2. You must then register your business with your Local Authority. You must inform HMRC that you are registering a self-employed business, even if running the activity is a side business, part-time job or a second job
  3. Think about getting a Food Safety and Hygiene certificate, especially a Level 2 if you are new to working with food and implement due diligence and HACCP
  4. Follow good food hygiene practices, gaina good understanding of food labelling regulations and supplying required allergen information (food labelling)
  5. Prepare your home baking kitchen to comply with legal food safety and hygiene standards and prepare for an inspection from the Environment Health Officer (EHO)
  6. Carry out a Risk Assessment with the additional section dedicated to identifying the risk associated with Covid-19
  7. Register your premises with your Local Authority
  8. Set up your insurance coverage
  9. Develop your online presence (create a website, set up social media accounts and create blogs)
  10.  Start baking!

Keep in mind regulations we’ve listed in this article are a guide. It’s always best to get advice from your local environmental health authority if there’s anything you’re not sure about

Although a food hygiene certificate isn’t compulsory, it’s strongly recommended by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and other official bodies to obtain one, if you are looking to start a food business and improve your knowledge for best food practice

A certificate will show your customers that you care about their safety and will help to develop consumer confidence in your brand

So whether it is cakes, cupcakes or cookies, we have the online training courses you need to start your online business. All our courses are CPD accredited and provide a same-day digital certificate upon completion
