What level of food safety training do I need in my role?
In the UK, food businesses are required by legislation to ensure that their staff members have been trained “commensurate with what they do”.
The amount of training required for an employee depends on their responsibilities and level in the business:
Level 1 Food Safety – Level 1 courses are suitable for any person that works in a food establishment, but that doesn’t directly handle food. This can include serving but not preparing food or handlers of pre-packaged or wrapped food.
Level 2 Food Safety – Level 2 courses are suitable for any food handlers including kitchen staff, chefs or caterers that are involved in the preparation and production of food.
Level 3 Food Safety – This level is training is appropriate for any managers or supervisors who have a responsibility in a food establishment.
